Environmental Education programmes
The complex layers of natural, historical and cultural diversity contained within the Blaauwberg Conservation Area (BCA) comprise a comprehensive range of outcome-based educational opportunities. This rich heritage can play a crucial educational role as an open-air classroom.
The location of the BCA, within the borders of the Cape Metropolitan Area (CMA), ensures easy access to thousands of learners – pre-primary to post-graduate level – for first hand experiences in:
» Archaeology – artefacts from the Khoisan period
» Ecology – studies of fauna and the natural environment
» Botany – the high density and variety of plant species
» Geology and Geomorphology – dune and shale formation
» History – studies of various historical periods
» Marine Biology – studies of beach and sea life
» Geography – human settlements, studies in urban growth and pressures
BCA Environmental Education Centre
The Environmental Education (EE) Centre at Eerstesteen in the BCA was launched on 19 February 2004. A cabin was donated by the broadcast company, ESPN, who used it for broadcasting during the 2003 Cricket World Cup. Part of the capital budget granted by the City to the BCA for 2003/2004, was used to renovate the cabin.
The Environmental Education Centre is a user-friendly, functional centre, complete with access for disabled persons. It can accommodate 50 learners for programmes. For more information for planning and booking your visit, click here.
