City and maritime authorities resume with SELI 1 oil spill cleaning up operations

Oil from the SELI 1 is again polluting the beach at Table View. The City of Cape Town, Department of Environmental Affairs and the South African Maritime Safety Authority has issued a joint media release after meeting at the disaster command post opposite the SELI 1 vessel to resume with clean-up operations at first daylight, Sunday, 4 September 2011.

Join in the BCA MATES Trail Challenge running event. 12 August 2011
The Mountain and Trail Enthusiasts (MATES) in partnership with the Friends of Blaauwberg Conservation Area are organising the ‘BCA Mates Trail Challenge’ running event in the Blaauwberg Conservation Area(BCA) on Saturday 15 October 2011.
There will be a short run (about 8 km) and a long run (about 15 km) through and over the two hills in the Blaauwberg Conservation Area. Registration will open at 06:00 and the race will start at 07:00. The short race will start just after the long race at 07:15.

City to clamp down on illegal off-road activities in the BCA 21 July 2011
The City of Cape Town’s conservation and law enforcement officers in the Blaauwberg area will be clamping down on individuals illegally entering and using the Blaauwberg Conservation Area (BCA) for quad-biking and other off-road activities.
A number of the BCA’s management tracks have been badly eroded due to the indiscriminate use by off-road enthusiasts. They access the BCA over weekends and after hours with their quad bikes, motorcycles and off-road vehicles for recreation purposes. This has caused a number of tracks to become eroded and a network of smaller tracks being created that has resulted in damage to sensitive vegetation and ecosystems and impacted on archaeological sites.
