Hikes and Walks

Blaauwberg Two Hills Hiking Trail

The trail is 7.3 kms long and not open to the public.  However, a walk on the trail is normally held on the last Saturday morning of each month (alternating with the Battle of Blaauwberg walk) under guidance of an FoBCA committee member. It starts early in the morning (starting time depending on the season) and finishes mid-day by 13h00.  It is an easy walk for the whole family (children 8 years and up) although there are short steep sandy sections.  The walk includes a recreational stop on Blaauwberg Hill, an overview of the Battle of Blaauwberg and information about the World War II buildings on top of Blaauwberg Hill. Hikers will be able to enjoy stunning views showing two World Heritage Sites, namely Robben Island and Table Mountain.

Battle of Blaauwberg Walk

This walk is about 6kms long and not open to the public.  It occurs on the last weekend of the month (alternating with the Two Hills walk), focusing on the Battle of Blaauwberg of 1806 that took place on the eastern section of the Blaauwberg Nature Reserve.  The walk is partly on soft sand and a change of altitude of 50m.  It starts early in the morning (starting time depending on the season) and finishes mid-day by 13h00.

There will be an overview of the Battle, and you will be shown the route taken by the British 1st Brigade on their march from Melkbosstrand into position on the day.  The group then follows in the footsteps of the 2nd Brigade Scottish Highland Regiments as they charged the Batavian line, and establish where General Janssens assembled his Batavian defense line against the invading British force.  A map and brief of the Battle will be provided to assist in your understanding of this historic event which influenced Africa.

The walk is led by registered tour guide Les Powrie, who is also an ecologist.
